The Fridge Is Talking And You Are Not Listening
On hearing the fridge, the traffic and the neighbour's opinions all at once
Try this some evening when nobody is watching and there is nothing you are supposed to be achieving. Sit still. Do not aim your attention at anything in particular. Do not brace, do not concentrate, do not adopt the special face people make when they are Being Present. Just let the mind go quiet in the way a room goes quiet after the guests leave.
What tends to happen is faintly ridiculous. You hear everything. The fridge conducting its private orchestra. A bus two streets away. Somebody's door. A bird with poor timing. Your own breathing, which you had apparently outsourced. None of it is louder than before — you simply stopped standing in front of it with a clipboard, sorting sounds into important and ignorable.
That is the difference between listening and straining. Straining is narrow: it picks one thing, grips it, and calls the rest interference. It is effortful and slightly self-congratulatory, and it exhausts you within about ninety seconds. Listening with ease is wide. Nothing is filtered out because nothing is being defended.
The same thing happens with people, which is where it gets uncomfortable. Most conversation is two people waiting for a gap. We hear the first eight words, decide what kind of statement this is going to be, and spend the rest of the sentence assembling our reply like a small legal team. Then we call it listening because our body was in the chair.
But if you can hear a distant bus without arguing with it, you can hear a person the same way. Not agreeing, not disagreeing, not building a rebuttal in the background — just letting the whole thing land before deciding what it means. It sounds passive. It is not. It takes considerably more nerve than having an opinion ready.
There is no method here, which is precisely the point. The moment it becomes a practice with steps, you are back to the clipboard. Sit somewhere unremarkable. Stop working so hard at it. Notice how much was already arriving while you were busy concentrating on something else.
No conclusions. No arrival.
